Thanks for the mention!
Interesting view. I specially liked your comment about killing an animal. I believe I've heard something like this before from Hare Krishnas. Anyways, your phrase got me going on a debate with some friends the other nigh.

Thanks again!

This entry was introduced in AIGA SD board meeting on last Monday. The unexpected connection between killing a food animal and graphic design strikes me so vivid. More effective than just saying, "wipe your butt." I'd use this metaphor when I explain to my friend!
(I agree it should be a required experience. That seems to be why some people in the US think fish are gross. People at my dad's age slaughtered chicken at their yard but no any more.)

A great overall review, and thanks for the props, Eric. Your presentation was such a breathe of fresh air; and it really showed the power of design relative to our climate crisis.

Thanks so much for both your presentation and posting this great roll-up! I thought the conference was incredibly important and energetic, and I am really excited to address this material from the skillset that I bring as an Interaction Designer. We are having an extremely lively conversation back at Adobe about the things we learned at Y13 - thanks so much to everyone involved.

The 13th annual Y-Conference was the most engaging yet for me, having attended most all of them. Finding and triggering the creative, problem-solving energy within the subject of our own global environment was the big mental shift for me. The focus of our design energies and strategies have been largely client-focused. The power-thinking of the conference was coming not from client-based work or from for-pay thinking but rather from people who are leading by example, crafting ways to effect change by turbocharging ideas with their powerful skills as graphic communicators.

I've written extensively on the subject myself having just come out of the housewares show in Chicago where the topic of creating sustainable design, which is housewares means biodegradable packaging and plastics primarily, were discussed ad in finitum. There was change beginning to take place and housewares is an industry that abhors change. However, I see significant moves being made over the next year in that industry just because those who have come across the breakthrough product are in positions to license the technology. As for print, I myself am deciding to not print newsletters anymore and go to pdf versions strictly. Any printing I do in my own office is on recycled paper product. But, my biggest concern and I'd either like to do research myself in this area or read of other's and could you please tell me where I can get more info on it, is in the color palettes that people wind up going with because they can't get the usual saturation in color with a recycled product. I'm seeing a range of colors that can be used that are best.........that's it.

As always, great post. It’s interesting to read a touch of all the things happening in this area. And the links are terrific—windows into so much additional information. I like the way you tied Ian’s perspective on eating meat to sustainability (and related issues). Really gets you to stop and think.

During my undergrad there was a student (friend of a friend) who believed what your friend Ian did. This student would hunt, capture, kill, prepare and eat his own rabbit, which are abundant at the University of Victoria campus.

And thank you for all of the links. Thats my favorite part about blogs as a doorway to so much other stuff!

Its great to hear about sustainability from so many fields. For it to have its full impact it has to permeate everything we do.
