When ever I read a Sagmeister interview, I always read his quotes and responses in HIS voice in my head.

LW: He talks about the motorcycle thing in his TED talk... you can find the talk on the TED website.

I did get the notion you were trying to ask better questions and I did find his answers to reveal a bit more about the psyche of Mr. Sagmeister. I read him as somebody who is not crude, but someone whom you can really push the buttons with and he'll still answer honestly. I appreciate trying to skirt convention Eric.

Maybe it stems from my want for the egos of designers to be worn on their sleeves. We all know we're ego driven, whether by vanity or for the sanctity of our work. We're also great philanthropists and shrewd business people, yet I feel a distinct disconnect of emotion when i read interviews with many designers.

We should just stock up interviews with current luminaries and then we can release them occasionally, when the new kids aren't pulling their weight.

Hi All!

Good suggestions! Yours are thoughts that I too have had. :-)

I'm an admirer of Stefan's work and his book is truly a delight. I spent a year carefully working through it, and enjoyed it immensely. But you are right, he has been the subject of many interviews, and his responses are starting to sound a little familiar.

I must also say, however, that I do appreciate how open and approachable Stefan is. It's nice of him to take the time to answer these questions, particularly given all of the demands upon his time.

I tried to wrap the whole thing around the theme of celebrity. My feeling was that this would afford us some insights that we hadn't been exposed to yet. I'm not sure that I structured the interview adequately to achieve this, but it was my intent. Regardless, I find the fellow fascinating, and am pretty stoked to have the opportunity to share a dialogue with him.

Thanks for your suggestions for other interview possibilities. In future months we certainly will have additional interviews on ideasonideas. Some will be from people you may never have heard of, but should have. I think we have a few good posts on the horizon.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Eric

Eric: nice interview, I especially liked your question "Do you talk to the person next to you on the flight?". I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to serve peanuts on flights anymore... I could be wrong, but it has something to do with the peanut oils and allergic reactions.

Josh: great idea. I would totally enjoy that. One step better would be getting the elite designer to interview the newbie. What do you say Stefan? =)

"Motorcycle ride through mountains"

It would be cool to know what kind of motorcycle he was on, and where he was. Maybe next time...

I'll read anything with The Sag in it. This interview was pretty good. I like how he cut-pastes, rather than copy-pastes. That seems like, hardcore, or something. Also: here here to Josh's idea above. It is true: too much Sag, or any high-profiler, is not a good thing.

Good interview Eric, but i'm about to raise my hand.

You know I love Stefan for everything he does, but I am wondering a bit why his promotional tour never ends regarding other people interviewing him incessantly.

I don't want to sound mean or cynical, but i'd rather see a candid interview with a scared shitless anonymous student coming out of college then a future design legend at this point. It would just feel more real, more in the moment and maybe interesting.

Anyone feel me on this?

I love Stefan's comments towards the beginning of the interview about self-marketing. There is no point in promoting yourself if you find no interest in doing so.
